What is it about man that sets us so distinctly apart from other life? What separates man from beast?

Man is really an evolved beast. The main difference between the two would be our emotions. We as humans are able to aknowledge and comprehend our emotions, thus have more control over them. Then there are slight differences like our physiology, thought process and posture. I wanted to add consciousness but I think that other animals are just as aware of there surroundings as we are.

I would say, the difference is, we can control our animalistic urges, but increasingly society is forgetting how to control them.

How can that be the difference between man and beast when human beings have and use instincts as well?

I agree with you Jimmyp except that I don't think they are forgetting how to control them. I think they are being taught not to control them.

I can tell you of the fact nature keeps a balance, and Earth is an amazingly complicated system. Beast, as we call them, are a part of this magnificent system, beast unlike man takes only what it needs and when it needs it, it takes only what is fundamentally essential for its survival and its existence here on Earth. Not only does beast take only as it needs, but beast helps to keep this balance of nature, beast plays its important role in keeping this harmonious balance. Man on the other hand, only treads and stomps all over this balance. It is a little confusing seeing as though we are the "superior" ones with the "superior" brains and intelligence. If you ask me, there is nothing more idiotically illogical and unintelligent than destroying one's own and only place of residence.
