The charging pads work. There used in small things like electric tooth brushes. They use induction, much like a transformer. The problem with induction for wireless transmission is that the effective voltage that can be produced on the other end is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between the two stations. To induce any significant voltage at any significant distance, say a meter or more, would require an enormous amount of voltage. People have wanted this for a long time and I'm sure many cooperations are working toward that goal (who wouldn't want the patent on that?), but it is kind of looked at as the perpetual motion machine, a little far fetched. Not to say it can't be done.

this article a while back, it address wireless power in much more concise way than I can now. And, I'm pretty sure, if it happens, it can be made safe for occupants.
